The UNESCO Chair Workshop on Open Technologies for OER is to be held on Tuesday 30 September 2014 at UNESCO Headquarters in conjunction with the 3rd UNESCO OER Chairs online annual meeting.
The workshop will be hosted and organized by the newly approved UNESCO Chair in Open Technologies for Open Educational Resources and Open Learning, the Jožef Stefan Institute together with other OpeningupSlovenia members and K4A directors. This will be an introductory scientific workshop and meeting to present planned and important activities within the framework of the implementation of the UNESCO Chair Open Technologies for OER. The workshop will precede the signature of the agreement between UNESCO and Jožef Stefan Institute to formally establish the Chair.
The aims and purpose of the workshop are to share and disseminate knowledge, information and experiences in state-of-the-art Internet based technologies and services that can be used to organize, present, browse, analyse, remix, reuse Open Educational Resources and more, and to promote cooperative and collaborative activities in several areas supporting the core themes of the UNESCO Chair. We will discuss the current problems and issues and advance knowledge on technology for open education in order to promote sustainable research, development and deployment of these technologies in UNESCO member states and beyond. The Chair will seek to bring forward research findings, case studies, success stories, recent advances in planning and design technologies, and examples of improved open education management policies, institutions, strategies and practices. This will include a presentation of the newly established initiative OpeningupSlovenia, a national research and innovation environment for Open Education, following the European Commission and communication Opening up Education and Horizon 2020 work programme.
We hope that this UNESCO Chair workshop and its deliberations will bring benefit to many of the UNESCO employees in the ICT and Education sectors and the Chair activities will be extended to continue the presented actions.
Motivation for UNESCO attendees:
- How can Big data be used in open education?
- Can we use Artificial Intelligence methods with ICT for OERs?
- How do you automatically translate and transcribe 20,000 academic talks?
- Can all aspects of Open Education and all uses OER be tested in one country?
Who should attend?
We’re expecting researchers, ICT experts, policy makers and those who are thinking about the next step in education on a large scale. We’re hoping that many others will join us, this workshop and Chair has a clear interdisciplinary and intersectoral dimension and it transcends several of UNESCO’s programmes: education and communication and information.
